Milton Bradley was the first company to produce Battleship as we know it today, with plastic boards and pegs, but the game had been published commercially in other forms since 1931 and similar games date back to the 1890s. In 1977, the computerized Electronic Battleship was released, said to be the first toy with a sound chip. The game was also one of the earliest to be produced as a computer game; in 1979, a version was released for the Z80 Compucolor. The 2012 film “Battleship” was based on the game, and Hasbro produced a version of the game based on the movie, with one side of the game having alien ship pieces.
