Polly Pocket was invented by Chris Wiggs in 1983. The initial toy consisted of a mini doll enclosed in a plastic case. The inside of the case would open to display a playset or dollhouse. The figurines, less than an inch tall, had round bases that could be inserted into holes around the inside of the case. The toy concept was licensed in 1989 to Bluebird Toys, a UK company. Mattel had a distribution agreement for the toys in the early ‘90s and later purchased Bluebird Toys in 1998. In 1999, Mattel released larger-scale “fashion” Polly dolls with rubbery clothing. In 2002, the smaller playset line was discontinued, but the larger fashion dolls continued to be produced. The fashion dolls were relaunched in 2010, but discontinued in the U.S. by 2012. By 2015, the brand was discontinued worldwide. A relaunch of the line occurred in 2018 with smaller-size playsets similar to the playsets of the ‘90s.
